The (Return of the) Fro Knows… Wrestling with EDH

Editor’s note – due to a lingering health issue and some personal matters the publication of this article has been delayed by roughly one month. This is in no way the author’s fault – the Fro is a pro when it comes to writing and the delay was caused entirely by yours truly. Without further delay, please allow me to welcome you to the triumphant return of our favorite Magic writer – Tyler “the ‘Fro” Priemer:

Every now and then I believe it’s important to take a break from tournament Magic and have some fun playing relaxing, casual Magic. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a group of friends that dabble in Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH/Commander) from time to time over drinks and pizza. When the moment strikes us, we come up with different deckbuilding challenges, such as building with a set budget, or all of your cards have to be from a specific block. Sometimes we try to build around a theme, and this is the story of one such theme….

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been a fan of pro wrestling. I fondly recall looking forward to staying up late twice a week to watch WCW and WWF matches with my dad, hearing stories about how my grandfather used to do amateur wrestling back in the 70s. I was raised watching the greats like Randy Savage, Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Legion of Doom, and Yokozuna fighting over championship belts, but unfortunately, roughly around the demise of WCW and the change from WWF to WWE, I found myself just not watching anymore.

Fast foHacksawandTheFrorward to last August when one of my favourite YouTube channels, Two Best Friends Play, started marathoning old wrestling games. It quickly became something I looked forward to every day, and I gradually got several of my friends to start watching with me. That’s when I had an epiphany: We should build pro wrestling-themed EDH decks. It had been weeks since we had a good deckbuilding challenge, and this was a theme we could all get behind.

The rules were simple. We each had to pick a wrestler or tag team and build a deck based around them. The cards could be based on different finishing moves they had, such as Goblin Sharpshooter in a Bret Hart deck, or just cards associated with their persona, like Pit Scorpion in a Sting deck. In my mind, there was only one wrestler I wanted to build a deck around. A man my dad and I cheered for since I was a kid, who I had the pleasure of meeting when I played a GPT at the Niagara Falls Comicon: “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan.
