Title: Throwaways #1
Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Caitlin Kittredge
Artist: Steven Sanders
When I was a 14 years old, I got my first job at a small comic store in my hometown. It was there that I was exposed to the world of Image and issue #4 of Spawn by Todd McFarlane. The imagery and the general style of Image comics have always spoken to me, while still outlandish, it didn’t cater to the sublime standards of DC and Marvel did in 1990’s, and ill be honest the swearing in comics was really cool when you are just a kid. – Since that time, many years ago, I have had a torrid love affair with all things Image Comics. Today is no different as we peek inside Throwaways #1 by Caitlin Kittredge.
1. A disposable asset, used for a single mission; 2. A disavowed assassin, meant to die alongside their target.
Meet Abby Palmer and Dean Logan two very damaged people on the run from their pasts – Abby is a vet with PTSD, Dean lives in the shadow of his infamous father. Politics, conspiracy, intrigue will rattle Abby and Dean as they discover there is more to them then what they have been led to believe. Caitlin Kittredge gives us her own take on the MK-Ultra story with Throwaways.
I was impressed with how much I connected with Dean right away as a character, the need to know more about his story really spoke with me. However, I can’t deflect how important Abby’s character is from the very start. She is a strong lead character whose demons are many but her mission never waivers. In many ways Abby reminds me of Alana from Saga, and that is pretty good company to keep.
While we are just learning who these two are, the successfulness of any story is to keep the reader engaged and the desire to come back for more – Then congratulations Abby and Dean as you are my two favourite heroes of the week. I am looking forward to see where their adventure takes them.
See you next time!
