The Fro Knows: The Party Gods

TFK Party Gods Top Header JPG1

Standard has reached a point where nearly anything is playable. If you see a first turn Temple of Malady, you could be against Abzan Aggro, Sultai Reanimator, Green/Black Devotion, or even Constellation. The format is so wide open that you’re never quite sure what you’ll be up against. In the recent past, Fate Reforged did a lot to help magnify the situation. The sheer power of cards like Ugin, Outpost Siege, and Tasigur made what was an already wide open format even wider. Red/White midrange became a deck. Frontier Siege-based Sultai ramp became a deck. Hell, even Blue/Black Dark Deal became a deck! However, one thing remains the same: I am still rocking Green Devotion.

Green/Red Devotion was my first love when rotation hit. There was just something about jamming the biggest things imaginable in a midrange format that screamed fun to me. While the See the Unwritten-centric build I had, carried me through Khans of Tarkir, Fate Reforged brought forth a swath of heavy hitting spells that were begging to be included. Unfortunately, several of these cards lacked enter the battlefield abilities to really abuse See the Unwritten the way I wanted and the ones that did, such as Sandsteppe Mastodon, were only situationally good. The popularity of sweepers like Crux of Fate and Drown in Sorrow even made big draws like Hornet Queen less appealing, and I quickly realized that it might be time to upgrade to a newer model.

While perusing the StarCityGames Open decklist archives, I noticed that there were a lot of Green Devotion decks splashing Red for Crater’s Claws and Stormbreath Dragons. These decks would put out an early board presence to clog up the ground and use Stormbreath Dragon to attack in the air. It seemed like a good starting point, but I felt like if the end game was to just jam Stormbreaths, the rest of the deck was superfluous. I could just play Red/White midrange if that was my end goal. I wanted a deck that used the ramping capabilities of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to their full potential. I wanted to go larger than huge. I wanted to go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb. With that in mind, I looked to Theros’s answer to Andrew W.K. for assistance, and sleeved up the following list:
